The importance of having a well-founded and designed logo is critical to your brand’s recognizability and long-term success. Think of your logo as the face of your company, and of course, you want to make a great first impression! So, here are 5 areas to keep in mind when designing your logo…
1. Choosing your colors
The colors you choose from your logo and overall brand should reflect who you are and what you do! Consider basing colors off of the ideals you want to be viewed for.
For example, the color red communicates emotions of love and passion. Red is very attention-grabbing and can actually raise a person’s blood pressure or make them hungry. So, if you are a food-based business, maybe red would be a color you could work into your logo! Another example of how colors affect the interpretation of your brand involves how the color blue is considered to be more calming and authoritative based. This is seen in many business and government logos as a result.
But you get the point – choose colors that support your brand, not go against it! Don’t be afraid to combine colors either, just be wary of overdoing it.
2. Keep it simple
The last thing that you want to do is overcomplicate your logo. When you look at large brands and companies, they all have simplistic logos that are easy to replicate and remember.
Consider Nike or Target for example; both of these companies use one color and a minimal shape to represent their entire brand.
While you might want to be more specific in your design or typography, just remember that less is usually more when it comes to logo design!
3. Typography matters…a lot!
Choosing a font to represent your logo and your overall brand can be a daunting task. There are thousands of fonts to pick from, so how do you know you’re choosing the best one? You want to first understand the differences between Sans and Sans Serif. Sans is usually considered to be viewed as more traditional while Sans Serif can be seen in a more modern light. This distinction is a good place to start if you’re just beginning your font search.
Remember to only use a limited number of fonts as well, and they should complement each other! A common mistake that people make is that they use too many fonts that clash. To combat this, decide on the main font to use for headings with a complimentary one to use for the body!
