How to Create an Effective Work Environment

Hope Watson

When you sit down to start your work, take a moment to notice what your environment looks like. Is it cluttered? Clean? Organized? Messy?

Today I want to talk to you all about the importance of having a work environment that supports your goals. Whether you work from home or at an office (or maybe you’re a student too!), it is vital that you create a space that helps to stay productive.

So, how can you create a work environment that works for you? Let’s break it down:

1. The importance of work life balance.

Especially since so many of us started to work from home or transition into online learning, our homes have clashed with our work lives.

It can be difficult to recognize when you should be working and when you should be resting. The idea of sleeping and working in the same environment is not always easy, so here are some tips to help balance it out.

Avoid doing your work from bed.

You might have heard this one before, but it is so true!

Even if your bed seems like a comfy way to work, it creates a bad habit and will not help you on your journey to create a healthy work-life balance.

Set up a designated space to work.

Having a desk set up somewhere in your room or home where you can work is an absolute game changer.

Designate the desk as OFW only for work”, and it will help your brain transition in and out of a work mindset as your sit down and leave your desk.

2. Add your personal touch.

No one wants to work somewhere that feels cold and distanced from their personality.

Whatever your interests are, bring them into your workspace. Whether that be personal photos, custom stationary, or anything else!

By adding your personal touch to your workspace, you increase your chances at actually enjoying your time at work.

3. Remove distractions and temptations.

I spoke briefly about this topic in last weeks YouTube video, but here’s what you need to know. You cannot be productive and focused if you surround yourself with distractions. If your phone distracts you, put it in a different room while you work.

One of the most important aspects of creating an effective workspace is making sure it’s free of anything that can prevent you from working.

So, remove those distractions BEFORE they become an issue!

4. Learn how to use technology as a tool.

While we all know that our phones can be major distractions, they can also truly help us in our day to day lives.

One of my favorite ways to use my phone as a productivity tool is by using the timer app. I set a 25 minute timer to do work, and when it goes off, I know I have a 5 minute break.

If you have an Apple Watch, that can also be a great tool! The timer app as well as Apple Shortcuts all provide helpful support when you’re working (without distracting you).

5. Set up your schedule.

The last tip for creating an effective work environment is to set up a schedule for when you are going to work.

During this time, notify your friends and family that you will not be available. If you have an iPhone, you can do this naturally and easily using certain Do Not Disturb and Work functions.

I really hope that this has helped you get a better idea of how you can create an effective work environment, and I’ll talk to you all next week! Thanks for reading! :)
